Former Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District Judge Joins Armstrong Teasdale
September 24, 2009
Armstrong Teasdale LLP announced that Harold “Hal” L. Lowenstein, the former Missouri Court of Appeals Western District judge, has joined the firm’s Kansas City office as Of Counsel. He is a member of the firm's Litigation practice group.
Lowenstein had been the longest serving appellate court judge of Missouri’s three districts and was the last appeals judge in the state to be appointed by Governor Kit Bond. He served nine years as a state representative for a Kansas City House District and an assistant Missouri Attorney General. In addition, Lowenstein was engaged in private practice before becoming a member of the judiciary. He has served on every level of the Missouri court system and has presided over 15 criminal and civil jury trials. Lowenstein joins Stephen N. Limbaugh Sr., former United States District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Missouri, who retired last year.
Mr. Lowenstein’s commitment to the community is extensive, as evidenced by his service on numerous advisory boards, including the Salvation Army, Whatsoever Community Center, Missouri Division of Youth Services and Missouri Juvenile Justice Advisory Group. He also donates his time during the holidays to Operation Breakthrough. In 1993, Lowenstein organized the Youth Athletic Group, which raises funds to help send 100 children to summer sporting camps. Additionally, Lowenstein funds scholarships at the University of Missouri School of Law to recognize a student who has made the most improvement throughout the three years. Furthermore, each year he funds an outstanding debater award to a Marshall High School student.
Laurence R. Tucker, managing attorney of the firm’s Kansas City, Missouri office, said, “Mr. Lowenstein’s 28 years bench experience and his expansive knowledge of current judicial thinking at the trial and appellate levels will bring valuable insight and perspective to Armstrong Teasdale’s client matters.” Tucker added, “This is a person with a wealth of knowledge about how the real world works and we are delighted to have him apart of our team.”
Lowenstein received his J.D. from the University of Missouri – Columbia School of Law in 1965 and his B.S. from the University of Missouri – Columbia in 1961. He is a member of The Missouri Bar, American Bar Association and the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association.
