Jury Gives Small Award in Worker's Retaliation Case
January 29, 2010
After a pre-trial demand of $100,000, a Platte County jury awarded $463 to an African-American janitor who claimed his employer fired him in retaliation for his past complaints about racial discrimination and harassment. John Vering represented The City of Riverside.
"There had been complaints about Echols' job performance before and after the alleged discrimination," Vering said. "On October 19, 2007, Echols failed to clean police headquarters as required by the city's cleaning schedule, and trash cans were overflowing."
